Ladies normally prefer a slim oval shaped facial appearance with a well-defined jawline. However, some may have a square shaped jawline due to a bulky masseter muscle - the muscle responsible for chewing. Now, changing a square shaped facial structure to a more oval shaped feature is a simple few minutes procedure with Botulinum injections, while the jawline can be defined using Threads or Dermal Fillers. Though Botulinum toxin is used to treat facial lines and wrinkles, it can also be used to reduce facial muscle size and reshape the face. Botulinum toxin, such as Botox or Dysport will be injected into the Masseter muscle. The muscle will be relaxed and eventually reduce in size over few weeks, giving a slimmer oval shape. Occasionally, Dermal Fillers or Threads can also be inserted to give a more well-defined jawline to augment the reduced Masseter muscle.
Tiny amounts of Botulinum, such as Botox or Dysport are injected into the Masseter muscle. The Masseter is the jaw muscle responsible for chewing and crunching. The Botulinum will cease muscle activity and the muscle eventually undergoes a physiological condition called hypotrophy – meaning shrinking of the muscle bulk. When the Masseter muscle becomes smaller, the face will appear smaller and adapts an oval shape. The muscle will start to shrink from the 3rd week onwards and reach optimal effect by the 6th week. The result lasts for 4 to 6 months. The longevity defers from person to person with some people enjoying longer benefits than others. The procedure is almost painless and does not require any sedation or anesthetic cream. Occasionally some amount of Dermal Filler or Threads are used along with the Botulinum to augment and define the jawline.
As in any injectable procedure, there are risks of bleeding or bruising. For Botulinum procedure, the drugs may diffuse into adjacent muscle and may cause alteration of smile and difficulty in chewing. Fortunately, these side effects are temporary and will recover completely in few months.
